Opera, Terror, and the French Revolution
Monday, March 26, 2018 - 7:00 p.m.
You won't want to miss this fascinating presentation by our Opera Talk host, Larry Verdugo.
The butchery that bloodied French history during the years of the Revolution led to far-reaching social and political upheaval. In several operas, composed during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, composers succeeded in bringing some sense of humanity and compassion in recalling that horrific time. These are highly emotional operas, deeply moving dramas with, of course, frequently beautiful music.
Certainly, this talk is not a history lesson but, rather, one that provides an emotional framework for these remarkable compositions, operas inspired by tales of that frightening time known as The Reign of Terror.
