FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I-5 Empire Avenue Interchange Opens to Traffic and
Three I-5 Ramps at Burbank Blvd. to Close for Construction
WHAT: The newly constructed I-5 Empire Avenue Interchange in Burbank will open to traffic early Monday morning, Sept. 30. Monday night, three of the five I-5 ramps at Burbank Boulevard will close for long-term construction. The new Empire Interchange is a key part of the detours for the three closed ramps. The ramps are (1) the northbound I-5 loop off-ramp to westbound Burbank Blvd., (2) the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Burbank Blvd., and (3) the westbound Burbank Blvd. loop on-ramp to southbound I-5.
WHEN: Monday, September 30, 2019.
DETOURS: SEE MAP ON NEXT PAGE. When the ramps are closed, drivers are advised to use the I-5 Empire Avenue Interchange as a primary alternative route.
Detour for the Northbound I-5 loop off-ramp to Westbound Burbank Blvd. -- Continue north on I-5 and exit at Empire Avenue/San Fernando Blvd.; turn right and take San Fernando Blvd.; turn right on Burbank Blvd.
Detour options for the Southbound I-5 off-ramp to Burbank Blvd. -- Drivers may:
(1) Exit at Empire Avenue; turn right on Empire Avenue; turn right on Lincoln Street; turn right on Victory Place and continue to Burbank Blvd. OR
(2) Exit at Empire Avenue; turn left and take San Fernando Blvd. to Burbank Blvd. OR
(3) Exit at Verdugo Avenue; turn right and take Front Street to Burbank Blvd.
Detour for the Westbound Burbank Blvd. loop on-ramp to Southbound I-5: Use the Southbound I-5 on-ramp at Empire Avenue or the Southbound I-5 on-ramp at Verdugo Avenue/Front Street.
WHY: These closures are part of the construction of I-5 improvements between Buena Vista Street and Magnolia Boulevard, including carpool lanes in both directions on I-5; the new Empire Avenue Interchange; elevated railroad tracks to eliminate the street-level rail crossing on Buena Vista Street at San Fernando Blvd.; reconstruction of the Burbank Blvd. bridge; realignment of ramps; and replacement of concrete pavement in both directions of I-5. The Burbank Blvd. bridge over I-5 will remain open until early 2020, when demolition will begin. A new bridge will be constructed with a scheduled opening date in 2021. The scheduled completion of the entire I-5 project is in 2021.
