What is a census and why is it important?

Once each decade, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a population count of everyone in the United States. The United States began conducting a census of population and housing in 1790 as mandated by the Constitution of the United States, Article 1, Sections 2 and 9.  All people living in the United States are required by law to participate and all responses to U.S. Census Bureau surveys are confidential and protected under Title 13 of the U.S. Code.

The data collected from the U.S. Census Bureau provide the basis for reapportioning congressional seats, redistricting, and distributing more than $675 billion in federal funds annually. These funds support states, counties and communities’ vital programs — impacting housing, education, transportation, employment, health care and public policy.
