CITY OF BURBANK YOUTH BOARD SELECTS RECIPIENTS FOR THE 2020-2021 AUSTIN COOK AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING YOUTH

Burbank, CA (May 27, 2021) – The City of Burbank Youth Board selected two students to receive the 2020-2021 Austin Cook Award for Outstanding Youth.  The award, named in honor of Austin Cook, recognizes middle and high school students for positive achievements or actions that has contributed to the community. Austin Cook attended Jefferson Elementary School and John Muir Middle School. His life touched the heart of the Burbank community and served as an example for all youth.

The first recipient of the award is Elina Hayrikyan. Elina is in 7th grade and attends John Muir Middle School.  This past year, Elina inspired the John Muir Middle School community by organizing a fundraising campaign to help the Armenian community affected by the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.  Elina raised thousands of dollars by making and selling key chains and bracelets. The Youth Board was impressed by Elina’s initiative and drive to help those suffering tragedies abroad.

The second recipient of the award is Liana Mirzakhani. Liana is a senior at Burbank High School. Liana moved to the United States at an early age with little knowledge of the English language. Despite this obstacle, Liana has proven she has the drive to overcome challenges and is an extremely hard worker. During her four years of high school, Liana completed over 1,000 hours of community service, is the current president of the Burbank High School National Honor Society, holds several leadership positions in multiple campus organizations, and is dedicated to serving her community.
Both recipients were nominated by their teachers and school counselors. The Burbank City Council recognition for the Austin Cook Award for Outstanding Youth will take place virtually at the Burbank City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m.
