Press Release: Burbank Welcomes Arezzo, Italy, as Its Fifth Sister City

Burbank, CA (December 13, 2022) – The City of Burbank is pleased to announce it has formed a new Sister City partnership with the City of Arezzo, Italy.

Arezzo becomes Burbank’s fifth Sister City. Sister Cities are formal relationships between cities in two countries with the aim of sharing activities that increase global understanding. Arezzo joins Burbank’s other Sister Cities: Solna, Sweden (1960); Incheon, Korea (1961); Gaborone, Botswana (1975); and Ota, Japan (1984).

The Sister City partnership with Arezzo came about after Burbank Mayor Jess A. Talamantes met Arezzo Mayor Alessandro Ghinelli at the MUSEXPO music industry conference held in Burbank in spring 2022.

“I am excited that Burbank has been able to expand its Sister City program during my term as Mayor,” said Mayor Talamantes. “In our conversation, Mayor Ghinelli and I realized that Burbank and Arezzo have much in common, being similarly sized cities and both supporting arts and media industries. I look forward to this new partnership.”

Arezzo is a city of about 100,000 people in the Tuscany region. It hosts an annual choral festival and has been the home to filming of movies including 1998’s Life Is Beautiful. Dating back to the Middle Ages, Arezzo also has numerous historic buildings and churches containing works of art.

“It is not only music that unites Arezzo with the City of Burbank but also the vibrancy of the entire cultural and creative production system,” said Mayor Ghinelli. “After visiting last March for MUSEXPO, I shared with Mayor Talamantes the willingness to start the path for the signing of the Sister City agreement between our two cities. In November, our City Council agreed to join with Burbank, offering great opportunities for exchange with what has been called the Media Capital of the World.”

The City of Burbank supports Sister City activities through the Library Services Department. The Sister City program is also supported by the independent nonprofit organization, the Burbank Sister City Committee. For more information, visit http://www.burbanklibrary.org/sistercity
