FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – TRAFFIC ADVISORY – NEW TIME SCHEDULE

Southbound I-5 Closed at Night in Burbank from June 3-19 for Bridge Construction

Drivers are Advised to Use Southbound I-405 as Alternate Route

BURBANK — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to close all lanes on Southbound I-5 in Burbank at night for three weeks beginning Thursday night, June 3, for bridge construction.

The nightly closures will continue until June 19. Detours will be provided, and Southbound I-5 will reopen each day before the morning commute. The closure will be from the I-5 Empire Avenue interchange to Magnolia Boulevard. Lanes on Northbound I-5 will remain open.

The closure will start at 11 p.m. each night and end by 5 a.m. with the following exceptions: On Friday nights, the closure will start at 11:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday mornings the closure will end by 6 a.m.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather or operational reasons. Caltrans will announce updates on the project’s website My5LA.com, and on Twitter at @My5LA.

During the closures, crews will lift and place 90-foot girders above the freeway at Burbank Boulevard where a bridge and interchange are being constructed for the I-5 HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle, or carpool lanes) project by Caltrans, Metro (Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) and the city of Burbank. The I-5 Burbank Boulevard Bridge is scheduled to open for traffic before the end of 2021.

Drivers on Southbound I-5 are advised to use Southbound I-405 (San Diego Freeway) as an alternate route.

Other alternate routes include Southbound State Route 170 (Hollywood Freeway) or exiting I-5 at Hollywood Way. Exiting Southbound I-5 at Buena Vista Street or Empire Avenue/San Fernando Blvd is not recommended except for local traffic. Some ramps in the area also will be closed, with detours posted. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
