To help keep your mail safe, the Burbank Police Department recommends the following simple steps:
Pick up your mail every day. If you have a mailbox at home or a P.O. box, don’t let mail sit overnight.
Go paperless when you can. Thieves often look for bank and credit card statements to steal your information. Signing up for online banking and paperless billing can help protect you.
Be careful with personal checks. Thieves may steal checks from the mail, erase the ink, and rewrite them in their own name for any amount.
Never send cash through the mail. Don't make your mail an easy target for thieves!
Send mail safely. Drop off outgoing mail inside your local post office or hand it directly to your mail carrier.
Going out of town? Put a hold on your mail at usps.com (opens in a new browser tab), or ask a trusted neighbor to collect it for you.
Missing something? If a check, bill, or other expected mail doesn’t arrive, contact the sender right away.
Report suspicious activity. If you think your mail was stolen or if you notice any sticky substances around the drop off bins, call the Burbank Police Department at (818) 238‑3000, and report it to the U.S. Postal Inspector as well.
A few quick habits can go a long way in keeping your mail – and your identity – safe.
