The Burbank Mental Health Evaluation Team (BMHET) is a partnership between the Burbank Police Department and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Together, the two agencies work to support individuals in the community who are experiencing mental health challenges or homelessness by providing a compassionate, coordinated response.
What is BMHET?
The Burbank Mental Health Evaluation Team (BMHET) is a co-response unit made up of Burbank Police Officers and a licensed mental health clinician from L.A. County’s Department of Mental Health. Together, they respond to situations where mental health or homelessness may be a factor.
How It Works
BMHET responds to 911 calls or police contacts involving individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. Once on scene, the team evaluates the person’s condition and determines if further mental health support or treatment is needed.
When appropriate, they can initiate emergency holds (per 5150/5585 WIC) and connect individuals with the right mental health services and resources available through L.A. County.
Beyond the Crisis
BMHET doesn’t just respond to emergencies: They also provide ongoing case management for individuals who regularly require police assistance. This helps reduce repeated emergency calls and allows patrol officers to focus on other needs in the community.
They also work with the Police Department’s Investigations Division to support appropriate action through the mental health and criminal justice systems.
Training & Awareness
BMHET plays a key role in educating officers and staff on how to recognize and respond to mental health situations with compassion and care.
