A Day in the Life of a Firefighter

Firefighters work a schedule consisting of two 24-hour shifts then 4 days off.

0700: Shift change. Personnel check their equipment and assigned apparatus. It is each member’s responsibility to ensure that all tools and equipment are in proper working order and we are operational ready.

0715: Line-up. Station Captains meet with their personnel to review the day's plans and expectations.

0745: Workouts. Maintaining a high level of physical fitness is key to ensure the safety of each member and the community.

0930: Maintenance. Each day of the week focuses on particular areas, tools, and equipment that need to be cleaned and/or maintained. This is also the time for Engineers to inspect their apparatus.

1000: Various activities. Personnel attend company schools taught by probationary firefighters. Personnel may also visit buildings that may pose special risk or review departmental policy.

1200: Lunch. Each member contributes money for two meals. A designated cook for the day buys the groceries and prepares the meals.

1300: Various activities. This is an opportunity to review any changes in the shift objectives.  Personnel may attend departmentwide training or provide public education through a station tour.

1700: Free time. If the day's objectives are completed, members have personal time to study, train, workout, etc.

All of the above is in addition to the main job of protecting lives, property, and the environment every time the Burbank Fire Department responds to an incident.
