Burbank PD Community Bulletin: National Teen Driver Safety Week
Burbank, CA (October 17, 2025) - National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 19-25, 2025, and the Burbank Police Department remains committed to protecting everyone on our roadways, especially young and newly licensed drivers.
Car crashes remain one of the leading causes of death for teens in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2023, a total of 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver, and 822 of those killed were the teen drivers themselves.
Parents play a critical role in teen driver safety and in communicating safe driving information. New teen drivers are still gaining experience behind the wheel, which increases the chance of dangerous situations for both the teen and other roadway users. It is important for parents to start these conversations now and continue them regularly.
The following tips may be helpful to parents and guardians for conversations about safe driving with their teens:
- Discuss and understand traffic laws, distracted driving, and provisional license restrictions.
- Be firm on expectations such as no phone use, minimizing distractions from passengers, always following the speed limit, and always wearing a seatbelt.
- Spend driving time with your teen and model safe driving behaviors. Teens learn by watching, so demonstrate good habits consistently.
- Emphasize that driving while impaired, or riding with someone who is impaired, is never acceptable.
The Burbank Police Department urges all parents, caregivers, and teens to prioritize safety, responsibility, and awareness on the road. Together, we can help prevent collisions and save lives.
