City of Burbank Joins Governor Gavin Newsom to Announce Expansion of California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program

Burbank, CA (July 3, 2025) — On July 2, 2025, the City of Burbank participated in a press conference with Governor Gavin Newsom, community leaders, entertainment industry stakeholders, and local officials to mark the expansion of California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program. Mayor Nikki Perez joined the Governor at the Burbank Ranch Lot Studios to celebrate the announcement, which includes a significant increase in state support for film and television production and 16 new television projects that will generate an estimated $1.1 billion in economic activity across California.

The expansion of the program more than doubles its annual funding, from $330 million to $750 million, and is projected to create nearly 6,700 cast and crew jobs statewide. The program aims to retain and grow California’s entertainment industry jobs, promote workforce diversity, and keep high-impact productions within the state.

“As the Media Capital of the World, Burbank knows the power of the entertainment industry and all the people behind it – it isn’t just part of our identity, it’s the backbone of our local economy,” said Mayor Nikki Perez. “This expansion is the beginning of what’s possible when local and state leaders work swiftly together in partnership with the industry and its people. Burbank is committed to doing our local part for our media and entertainment industry and we're grateful to Assemblymember Zbur, Senator Allen, and Governor Newsom for championing this investment in our community. This is a commitment to sustaining livelihoods, protecting our creative legacy, and establishing meaningful change that strengthens Burbank and all of California.”

To support these goals locally, the City of Burbank recently launched a Creative Industry Task Force, an advisory group that will be made up of professionals and stakeholders from across the entertainment sector. The Task Force will work closely with City Council to identify challenges, explore new opportunities, and shape policies that help retain, attract, and grow creative jobs in Burbank.

The new funding, launched under Program 4.0, will be integrated into upcoming application cycles administered by the California Film Commission. This includes television project applications in July and film project applications in August.
