L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger Presents $40,000 Check for Adaptive Sports Equipment in Burbank

Burbank, CA (November 1, 2023) – On Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the City of Burbank Parks and Recreation (Department) will host a check presentation ceremony to celebrate Los Angeles County’s contribution of $40,000 for the purchase of mobility equipment for the City’s Adaptive Sports Program.

This event is open to the public and will take place at the McCambridge Recreation Center at 1515 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, CA 91504.

Los Angeles County Supervisor, Kathryn Barger, will join local leaders to present the check. “I’m a proud supporter of the City of Burbank’s Adaptive Sports Program,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “With over 2,000 youth with special needs in the Burbank Unified School District, it is critical that we prioritize inclusivity in sports and recreational opportunities for youth of all abilities. I commend Burbank’s commitment to both promoting inclusivity and proactively making play accessible to individuals with disabilities.”

The mobility equipment will be purchased using Proposition A funding. “Measure A, approved by voters with nearly 75% and administered by the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District (RPOSD), is centered in access for all,” said Norma E. García-González, Director of the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District. “We are proud that this Measure A grant exemplifies our collective commitment to access for all by supporting Adaptive Sports for youth in the Burbank and the greater San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and San Gabriel Valley areas.”

Adaptive sports provide a platform for individuals with disabilities to showcase their talents, determination, and resilience. Engaging in sports improves cardiovascular health and muscle strength, leading to improved overall health outcomes.

"The City’s vision for the Adaptive Sports program is to develop a comprehensive, innovative, and diverse offering of programs which allow individuals of all ages and ability levels to participate in activities that improve quality of life, boost self-confidence and self-esteem, help individuals overcome challenges, and achieve personal goals,” said Marisa Garcia, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Director for the City of Burbank. “The Department is grateful for Supervisor Kathryn Barger's contributions to this program. The City of Burbank is proud to provide this exciting opportunity to our community, including sports like Powerchair Soccer, Wheelchair Rugby, and various Adaptive Sports. These opportunities promote accessible and inclusive sports for athletes in the Greater San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and San Gabriel Valley regions."

Through grants like this, the City of Burbank will raise awareness about the capabilities of people living with disabilities, challenging stereotypes, and promoting a more inclusive society.
