Coyote Safety & Awareness

Burbank Animal Shelter: Coyotes are a natural part of our community. Coyotes are intelligent, adaptable, and play an important role in our ecosystem. We can coexist peacefully by respecting their space, keeping them wild, and keeping our community safe. Here are some safety and awareness reminders:

• Report coyote concerns to the Burbank Animal Shelter at (818) 238-3340 or by visiting burbankanimalshelter.org or coyotehazing.com
• Never feed a coyote. Feeding coyotes - even unintentionally - teaches them to associate people with food. This leads to bold, dangerous behavior and puts coyotes at risk of being euthanized. Feeding coyotes is prohibited and individuals caught feeding will be cited.
• If you encounter a coyote: Don't just observe, haze it! Get big, get loud, and shout, "GO AWAY COYOTE!" Hazing teaches coyotes to be wary of people and that people are not a food source. 
• Examples of hazing:
  • GET BIG: Face the coyote. Stand tall, raise your arms, and open your jacket. Make yourself look as large as possible.
  • GET LOUD: Yell in a deep voice, clap your hands, blow a whistle or air horn.
  • HAZE: Slowly and confidently move toward the coyote to force it to leave. Don't run!
• Keep Pets Close: Keep dogs close to you on a leash and under control. Never let pets approach or chase coyotes.
• Secure Your Space: Bring in pet food, don't leave trash out, and secure yards and coops - don't attract coyotes.
• See something, say something. If you see a coyote acting bold, approaching people or pets, or being fed - report it!
