A personal disaster kit – sometimes called a “go kit” – is designed to be portable and keep you supplied for three to five days. Think of it as your grab-and-go safety pack. Each person in your household should have one, in addition to the larger family household kit.
Keep your go kit in a duffle bag or backpack stored somewhere easy to grab, like under the bed or by the door. At a minimum, it should include:
- A change of clothes plus a sweatshirt, light jacket, or hoodie
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes
- A flashlight
- Basic pain relievers (Motrin, ibuprofen, etc.)
- A 3–5 day supply of any prescription medications you take
- A small first aid kit (bandages, antiseptic wipes, etc.)
- Snacks like protein bars or granola bars
- Paper and pens or pencils
- Comfort items—books, games, or toys for kids, something that makes you feel grounded
A personal kit doesn’t have to be complicated, but having one ready could make all the difference in an emergency. Don’t wait, start putting yours together today!
