Emergencies can happen when you’re at work, so it’s smart to be prepared. A workplace disaster kit is small enough to keep under your desk or in a cabinet, yet portable enough to grab and carry with you if you need to leave quickly. It should have enough supplies to sustain you for three to five days.
Store your kit in a duffle bag or backpack. At a minimum, it should include:
- A sweatshirt, light jacket, or hoodie for warmth
- Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes (in case you need to walk long distances after an emergency)
- A flashlight
- Basic pain relievers: ibuprofen (such as Motrin), etc.
- A three to five day supply of any prescription medications you take
- A small first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and other basics
- Three days’ worth of food and water (Coast Guard–approved rations are compact and last up to five years)
- Paper and pens or pencils for notes and communication
