A vehicle disaster kit is designed to help you survive for up to three days if your car gets stuck in a storm – or to take with you if you ever have to leave the vehicle on foot. It’s a simple way to be prepared for emergencies on the road.
Pack your kit in a duffle bag or backpack and keep it in your vehicle at all times. At a minimum, include:
- Blankets: Mylar emergency blankets are best, lightweight, compact, inexpensive, and easy to keep one for each passenger.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Closed-toe shoes in case you need to leave the vehicle and aren’t wearing the right footwear.
- Flashlight
- Basic pain relievers: Motrin, ibuprofen, etc.
- Small first aid kit: Bandages, antiseptic wipes, and other basics.
- Food and water for three days: Coast Guard–approved rations are a good option since they’re compact and last up to five years.
- Paper and pens/pencils
Don’t wait – start putting your kit together today.
Important: If you are stuck in a storm, it is usually safest to remain with your vehicle until help arrives. Leaving the vehicle should only be a last resort.
