E-Bikes and Shared Use Mobility

Ebikes & Shared Use Mobility

E-bikes

E-bikes come in three classifications:

  • Class 1: Pedal assisted bicycle equipped with a motor with a top assisted speed of 20 miles per hour
  • Class 2: Throttle assisted bicycle equipped with a motor with a top assisted speed of 20 miles per hour
  • Class 3: Pedal assisted bicycle equipped with a motor, a speedometer, with a top assisted speed of 28 miles per hour

The California Vehicle Code treats Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes as pedal bicycles.

Class 3 bicycles require riders to be at least 16, though a drivers license is not required. Class 3 e-bikes are also banned on bike paths such as the Chandler Bikeway and the Burbank Channel Bikeway. All riders of Class 3 e-bikes must wear helmets.
